Dr. Cheng is Vice
Presdient of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, P.R. China. Zhejiang
University is one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities
in China. A major comprehensive university, Zhejiang University
has a significant commitment to agricultural education and related
disciplines, and has been a leader across China in this respect.
Dr. Cheng is a 1964 graduate of Zhejiang University. He has
experience as a visiting professor in the Department of Biology,
Imperial College, United Kingdom and the Department of Entomology,
University of Maryland, USA. Dr. Cheng served as head of the
Department of Crop Protection at Zhejiang Agricultural University
for five years (1992 to 1997) before being named President of
Zhejiang Agricultural University. In 1998, Dr. Cheng was named
Vice President of Zhejiang University when four universities
in the region were consolidated. He is the author of more than
95 scientific papers and 5 books, most on topics related to
pest management and entomological science.
Dr. Cheng is part of the founding leadership of the Global Consortium
of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture and is a current
member of the Executive Committee, a requirement stated in the
GCHERA Bylaws for election to this leadership position. Moreover,
Dr. Cheng comes from a region of the world different from the
current President (Martin Jischke) and the incoming Presdient
(Dmytro Melnychuk) thus contributing to the GCHERA goal to be
globally inclusive.
